{"id":209,"date":"2017-11-26T17:00:58","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T01:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/?p=209"},"modified":"2017-11-26T17:44:44","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T01:44:44","slug":"cryptocurrency-precious-metals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/26\/cryptocurrency-precious-metals\/","title":{"rendered":"Cryptocurrency or Precious Metals: No Need to Choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the recent meteoric rise in the price of cryptocurrency such as bitcoin, preppers have been wondering whether to jump on the bandwagon with crypto, or stay the course with more traditional precious metals.\u00a0 Even long term precious metals champions in the liberty community such as &#8220;Ranting&#8221; Andy Hoffman and Bix Weir have been heard recently abandoning silver advocacy positions they have professed for years.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s keep in mind cryptocurrency isn&#8217;t new.\u00a0 Bitcoin has been around for roughly five years.\u00a0 Why the sudden swing upwards in price, while precious metals have remained relatively flat?\u00a0 No one can be completely sure.\u00a0 From a prepper point of view, there are definitely some advantages and disadvantages that should be considered before buying into the craze.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Cryptocurrency Advantages<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Portability.\u00a0 It is definitely true that it is easier and safer in most instances to travel with cryptocurrency vs. precious metals.\u00a0 Going through an airport?\u00a0 As long as you arrive someplace with decent connectivity, you can pretty much take only your smartphone with you, and still have full access to your wealth.\u00a0 Bringing gold or silver in your bags is going to be met with all sort of difficulties: customs, security, risk of theft, etc.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Litecoinhttp:\/\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-211 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/litecoinlogo-300x80.png\" alt=\"Litecoin cryptocurrency\" width=\"300\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/litecoinlogo-300x80.png 300w, https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/litecoinlogo.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Exchangability.\u00a0 As more and more merchants accept crypto as payment, it will become easier and easier to purchase goods and services, including at a distance.\u00a0 This is ultimately the purpose of money &#8211; to serve as a medium of exchange.\u00a0 If you want to exchange silver for an item, you&#8217;ll need to purchase it in person, and far fewer sellers would consider accepting silver.\u00a0 Unfortunately many crypto holders are currently hoarding their coins expecting appreciation rather than exchanging it freely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Cryptocurrency Disadvantages<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>No Anonymity.\u00a0 Contrary to the popular myths, the majority of cryptos including bitcoin are anything but anonymous.\u00a0 In fact, every transaction is recorded publicly in the block chain.\u00a0 This provides a perfect trail back to an initial public funding event, such as purchasing via credit card or bank account at Coinbase.\u00a0 After that initial purchase, the subsequent purchases made with the crypto are completely trackable.\u00a0 The origin of those coins can be traced back to the initial USD purchase.\u00a0 Buy something in person in private with silver, and the transaction is between you, the seller, and the fencepost.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Connectivity.\u00a0 There are some mechanisms that allow offline &#8220;cold&#8221; storage.\u00a0 However, if you want to actually transact in crypto, you&#8217;re going to need some connectivity at some point.\u00a0 This is not exactly convenient in any grid down scenario.\u00a0 In a short term <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bitcoin\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/307px-Bitcoin_logo.svg_-300x63.png\" alt=\"Bitcoin logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/307px-Bitcoin_logo.svg_-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/www.preppersoft.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/307px-Bitcoin_logo.svg_.png 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>power\/connectivity loss situation, cash is going to be king, not precious metals or crypto.\u00a0 If the duration of the downtime extends, cash will remain useful, but barter in items including precious metals will gain favor.<\/li>\n<li>Taxes.\u00a0 You can bet the IRS is going to want their &#8220;fair share&#8221; of any &#8216;gains&#8217; they perceive crypto as generating.\u00a0 They have issued guidance that crypto is <strong>not<\/strong> a currency, and therefore cost basis &amp; profit must be tracked as with any commodity.\u00a0 With crypto&#8217;s infinite divisibility, this makes bookkeeping an absolute nightmare.\u00a0\u00a0 Which 0.002352 BTC did you use to buy that cup of coffee at Starbucks?\u00a0 Think you won&#8217;t bother tracking it that closely?\u00a0 Remember the anonymity disadvantage &#8211; every transaction is completely traceable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Bottom Line<\/h3>\n<p>Crypto has several advantages and several disadvantages over precious metals.\u00a0 The largest concern however is timing &#8211; an absolutely parabolic rise in price since the beginning of the year.\u00a0 Not to pick on crypto specifically &#8211; history tells us that hockey stick upward moves in <strong><em>any<\/em><\/strong> asset only end one way: badly.\u00a0 We saw that a few years ago recently in silver when it rocketed to $50 only to plummet back to sub-$20.\u00a0 Before that, in 2007, we saw the same behavior in real estate, and before that in 2001 we saw the dot-com craze &amp; crash in the stock market.<\/p>\n<p>The prepper should tread cautiously with any crypto purchases while there is clearly a mania underway.\u00a0 Once the euphoria dies down and the price returns to a reasonable level, it does make sense to consider a portion of wealth diversified into crypto for its specific advantages.\u00a0 However that portion should be <em>in addition to not as a replacement for the portion in precious metals<\/em>.\u00a0 A sign to watch for is when people actually start using crypto as money rather than as a speculative play.\u00a0 At that point the real potential story of a fully decentralized digital currency may be realized, especially if the IRS grants more favorable tax treatment.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preppers have traditionally stored a portion of their wealth in precious metals, such as gold and silver.
