But is this true?\u00a0 This article will review a variety of causes of a pink eye, the differences in presentation of each, \u00a0appropriate treatment depending on cause,\u00a0and the likelihood of transmission to another person.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s Note<\/strong>: The information presented on this website is intended for educational &amp; informational purposes only and is not meant to replace a visit to a qualified healthcare provider.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not all causes of eye redness are contagious.\u00a0 Not all causes of eye redness require treatment by a medical professional.\u00a0\u00a0The following are\u00a0common causes of eye redness:\u00a0 allergy, viral <a href=\"http:\/\/shareasale.com\/r.cfm?b=897467&amp;u=1063422&amp;m=10554&amp;urllink=&amp;afftrack=\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.shareasale.com\/image\/10554\/linkshare-affiliates-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Shop All Medical Supplies and Save!\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>infection, bacterial infection, eye injury, rupture of a surface\u00a0eye blood vessel, eye dryness,\u00a0 environmental irritants, and\u00a0glaucoma.\u00a0\u00a0There are additional causes of eye redness,\u00a0but these are outside the scope of this article.\u00a0 The reader is referred to ophthalmology textbooks for further information on these.<\/p>\n<p>Allergic conjunctivitis can involve one or both eyes, has stringy\/stretchy white colored drainage (if any) and often involves swollen eye lids.\u00a0\u00a0Some people may even experience very, very\u00a0small\u00a0&#8220;blisters&#8221;\u00a0near the lashes or\u00a0on the reverse side of the lid. \u00a0In this <strong><em>NON-CONTAGIOUS<\/em><\/strong> eye\u00a0ailment, the eyes\u00a0may be itchy and watery and a person may experience seasonal allergy symptoms at the same time. It involves NO reports of vision changes or pain,\u00a0and a person may have tan crusting near\/around the eyes after sleep.\u00a0 Treatment involves blocking the chemicals of allergic reaction, namely histamines.\u00a0\u00a0washing face\/hands\/hair, eliminating or avoiding allergen, and using\u00a0anti<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/medlibes.com\/uploads\/Screen%20shot%202010-08-05%20at%205.26.38%20PM.png\" width=\"383\" height=\"232\" \/>-histamine eye drops.<\/p>\n<p>Bacterial conjunctivitis can involve one or both eyes, has yellow or green thick pus like drainage, and the patient may reports the eyes crusted shut when they\u00a0woke up from sleep.\u00a0 Though irritation, gritty sensation may be reported, there is rarely pain or\u00a0visual changes. \u00a0In very young children, it is typically caused by bacteria on the hands introduced to the eye.\u00a0 In older children and adults, the most typical cause is bacteria from the patient&#8217;s own sinuses or hands.\u00a0 The primary way that this eye ailment can be spread to another person, is if the pus from the infected eye is introduced into a non-infected eye.\u00a0 From one eye to another in the same person, this can happen quite frequently, but from one person to another, this is much more difficult to accomplish.\u00a0 This is a <strong><em>POTENTIALLY CONTAGIOUS<\/em><\/strong> eye ailment. Antibiotic eye drops, <strong>as well as<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0evaluation for and treatment of an underlying sinus infection by a medical professional\u00a0are recommended.\u00a0 Oftentimes, antibiotic eye drops are prescribed, but a sinus infection remains untreated, which may contribute to a recurrence of eye symptoms once the eye drop is completed. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/media.clinicaladvisor.com\/images\/2011\/03\/03\/conjunctivitis_bacterial2_149590.jpg\" width=\"405\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Common viral conjunctivitis is <strong><em>VERY CONTAGIOUS<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 It typically involves both eyes, has watery drainage, and usually precedes a common cold or other viral illness.\u00a0 It may appear that a person is crying, though they are not sad or in pain.\u00a0\u00a0Similar to common viral illnesses, this may be spread through infected droplets whether in the air (someone coughs\/sneezes) or on surfaces (door knobs, gas pumps).\u00a0Treatment generally involves comfort measures, as in the case of common viral illnesses this is a self<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/2cu.co.uk\/conjun8.jpg\" width=\"361\" height=\"236\" \/>-limited infection and will resolve without medications.\u00a0Occasionally the inflammation will be so uncomfortable that steroid eye drops may be prescribed.\u00a0For serious viral infections (ie., Herpes or Cytomegalovirus), oral and\/or intravenous medications are used.<\/p>\n<p>Eye injuries whether superficial (ie., a scratched cornea or surface blood vessel rupture from coughing) or highly traumatic (ie., foreign body puncturing the eyeball), can cause an eye to become reddened.\u00a0 Typically these involve one eye, but can involve both eyes.\u00a0 Generally the eyes will have increased watery drainage, pain, and visual changes.\u00a0 Obviously, eye injuries are <em><strong>NOT CONTAGIOUS<\/strong><\/em>, which is a very good thing!!\u00a0 It is important to have known or suspected eye injuries evaluated by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist to prevent complications.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.westsideoptometrynow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/black-eye.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With aging and certain diseases (ie., Sjogren&#8217;s disease), &#8220;dry eye&#8221; can contribute to eye redness and a sensation of irritation.\u00a0 Generally there is minimal drainage from the eyes,\u00a0though there may be\u00a0an increase of tearing.\u00a0\u00a0Typically, no pain or vision changes occur with this scenario. This is a <em><strong>NON-CONTAGIOUS<\/strong><\/em> eye redness, that is more often treated with moisturizing eye drops and encouraging increased oral fluids.\u00a0 Though most often harmless, because it may involve older adults, it is important <a href=\"http:\/\/shareasale.com\/r.cfm?b=526219&amp;u=1063422&amp;m=10554&amp;urllink=&amp;afftrack=\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i.shareasale.com\/image\/10554\/cwi-animation.gif\" alt=\"CWI Medical Healthcare Supplies\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>to evaluate these symptoms, to rule out other age-related conditions requiring medical treatment<\/p>\n<p>Glaucoma, especially the\u00a0acute angle variety may have redness, increased tearing, pain and visual changes associated with it.\u00a0 Changes of the iris (colored portion) of the eye may also be present.\u00a0 The cause is an increase of the pressure within the eyeball.\u00a0 It requires immediate evaluation and treatment.\u00a0 If left untreated, it may result in a\u00a0permanent decrease of vision or blindness.\u00a0 This is a <strong><em>NON-CONTAGIOUS<\/em><\/strong> illness.\u00a0 Treatment may involve eye drops to decrease pressure, oral medications, or even surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Various chemicals, cleaners, and smoke\u00a0found at home, work, neighborhoods,\u00a0and schools\u00a0have the potential to cause redness of the eyes.\u00a0 Whether\u00a0by splashing or through vapor,\u00a0an actual &#8220;burn&#8221; of the sensitive eye membranes can\u00a0occur.\u00a0 The reaction of the body to the toxic substance,\u00a0causes the eye redness.\u00a0 The eyes may <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pluslifestyles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/glaucoma.jpg\" width=\"406\" height=\"296\" \/>also having increased tearing, as the body attempts to flush and cleanse the eyeball.\u00a0 This is a<em><strong> NON-CONTAGIOUS<\/strong><\/em> situation, that requires\u00a0immediate relocation of the patient away from the offending substance and\u00a0generous flushing of the eyes with water or normal saline to decrease potential damage from the chemical.\u00a0 Evaluation of the eyes by an ophthalmologist or Optometrist is important to determine if additional treatment may be needed.<\/p>\n<p>For the past 27 years, I have been attempting to educate school nurses, teachers, ancillary medical providers, and PHYSICIANS\u00a0regarding the use of the term &#8220;pink eye&#8221;.\u00a0 Almost everyone, when hearing that term, becomes hysterical and adopts near germaphobe behaviors, including\u00a0extreme handwashing,\u00a0isolation of the person with symptoms, and\u00a0environmental saturation with sanitizing cleansers.\u00a0 This article reviewed possible common causes of eye redness, as well as\u00a0the\u00a0contagiousness\u00a0and the treatments associated with each.\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lenspick.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/conjunctivitis.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many parents have received that dreaded phone call from a school nurse, teacher, or daycare provider requesting their child be picked up immediately from school due to probable &#8220;pink eye&#8221;?\u00a0 Though &#8220;pink eye&#8221; is layperson terminology, it has become synonymous in people&#8217;s minds as a highly contagious eye infection.
